Reducing Latency on Your Game Server

Reducing Latency on Your Game Server

High ping and lag ruin the gaming experience. These steps help minimize latency for your players.

1. Choose the Right Server Location

The single biggest factor in latency is physical distance. Choose a server location geographically closest to the majority of your players. A New York server gives ~10 ms to US East Coast players but ~100 ms+ to European players.

2. Enable CPU Performance Governor

apt install cpufrequtils -y
cpufreq-set -g performance
# Make persistent:
echo 'GOVERNOR="performance"' > /etc/default/cpufrequtils

3. Tune Kernel Network Parameters

nano /etc/sysctl.conf
# Increase network buffers
net.core.rmem_max = 134217728
net.core.wmem_max = 134217728
net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 4096 87380 134217728
net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 65536 134217728
# Reduce latency for interactive traffic
net.ipv4.tcp_low_latency = 1
sysctl -p

4. Reduce Background Load

# Identify high-CPU processes:
htop
# Stop unnecessary services:
systemctl stop snapd cron.daily

5. Monitor Network with iftop

apt install iftop -y
iftop -i eth0

Check for unexpected traffic consuming bandwidth.

6. Use nload to Monitor Bandwidth Saturation

apt install nload -y
nload

If incoming or outgoing traffic is at the port limit, bandwidth saturation is causing lag. Consider upgrading to a 10 Gbps port.

7. Test Latency from Players' Locations

Use tools like ping.pe to ping your server IP from multiple global locations and identify problem regions.
