Setting Up Reverse DNS (rDNS / PTR Record)

A reverse DNS (PTR) record maps your IP address back to a hostname. This is important for mail servers and overall server reputation.

Why rDNS Matters

  • Mail servers check rDNS to verify sender legitimacy and reduce spam scores
  • Some services require a valid PTR record for access
  • Improves your server's overall reputation

How to Request rDNS at Racklot

  1. Log into your client area
  2. Navigate to your service details
  3. Open a support ticket with:
    • Your server's IP address
    • The desired hostname (e.g., mail.yourdomain.com)
  4. Ensure your domain's A record already points to your server IP before requesting rDNS

Verify rDNS is Set

dig -x YOUR_SERVER_IP

Look for a PTR record in the output pointing to your hostname.

Testing Mail Server rDNS

host YOUR_SERVER_IP

Output should show something like: YOUR_SERVER_IP.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer mail.yourdomain.com
